j-hope discovered his love for dance at a young age. He became the youngest student to join the Gwangju Music Academy at the age of 10 years old. He would also become a student at the Joy Dance Academy until the age of 16. j-hopeβs dance skills would earn him a number of dance awards to include a 1st place win in a 2008 national dance competition.
During this time, j-hope become a member of an underground dance team known as βNeuronβ. In 2010, j-hope auditioned for Big Hit Entertainment and was signed to join BTS as the third member of the band where he would learn to rap and sing.
In 2011, Lee Seung Giβs album βTonightβ was released and included the song βA Song That Will Make You Smileβ featuring RM and j-hope. The song would be remastered and released again in 2020 as part of Lee Seung Giβs compilation album βThe Projectβ.
On June 17, 2012, 2AMβs JoKwon released his song titled, βAnimalβ featuring j-hope. The song was co-wrote by j-hope and would chart at #1 on iTunes 8 years later on July 3, 2020.
On June 25, 2012, j-hope made an appearance in 2AMβs JoKwon βIβm Da Oneβ music video along side Jin, SUGA, V, and Jungkook.
When coming up with a stage name, j-hope requested that the word βHoβ from his namesake be part of it. He wanted to have meaning behind the name as well.

On February 14, 2013, j-hope posted his first vlog on BTSβ official YouTube account where he shared his goals and wished viewers a Happy Valentineβs Day.

On June 13, 2013, j-hope debuted as part of BTS on Mnet M! Countdown performing their track βNo More Dreamβ from the bandβs debut single album β2 Cool 4 Skoolβ. He wrote and produced several of the songs on the album and would continue to write for the band and other artists in the years to come.

On October 1, 2013, BTS released their song, βBeautiful,β featuring j-hope, Jimin, V, & Jungkook. It is adaptation of Mariah Careyβs song with the same name.
The lyrics were written by RM, j-hope, and Supreme Boi, and mixed by Pdogg.
On December 23, 2013, BTS released the song titled, βA Typical Idolβs Christmas (νν μμ΄λμ ν¬λ¦¬μ€λ§μ€),β featuring Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, and V. The song is an adaptation of Justin Bieberβs song, βOnly Thing I Ever Get for Christmas.'

On June 11, 2018, RM, SUGA, and j-hope released their song titled βDdaengβ for the 2018 BTS Festa. The song was produced by by SUGA, J.Pearl, RM, J-Hope.
On July 23, 2018, j-hope posted a video on Twitter of himself participating in the βIn My Feelingsβ challenge, a popular craze that swept the internet with thousands of social media users sharing videos of themselves dancing to the song βIn My Feelingsβ by rapper/songwriter, Drake.
The video went on to gain 10.5 million views within the first 2 weeks after it was uploaded. A clip of the video also made its way into the official video for Drakeβs song that was released on August 2, 2018.

On June 14, 2019, BTS released their second single from their album, βBTS World: Original Soundtrackβ titled βA Brand New Dayβ featuring j-hope, V, and Swedish singer Zara Larsson.

On September 27, 2019, j-hope released his single, βChicken Noodle Soupβ featuring American singer, Becky G who also contributed to writing trilingual lyrics. j-hope wanted to feature the song on his mixtape, βHope Worldβ and he wanted to collaborate with another artist but he was not able to accomplish this in time before the album was released.
βChicken Noodle Soupβ is a remake of DJ Webstar and rapper Young Bβs song with the same name and was meaningful to j-hope as he listened to it often when he was learning to dance.
The track debuted at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making j-hope the first member of BTS to chart on the Hot 100 as a solo artist. He was also the third Korean solo artist to rank on the chart and the sixth Korean artist overall to do so.

On December 25, 2019, j-hope and Jin performed their own rendition of the classic song βFeliz Navidadβ on a special Christmas episode of βSBS Gayo Daejeon.β

On January 21, 2020, j-hope was promoted along side RM to full members of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA).
They both joined SUGA who was promoted to full member in 2018. Only 25 junior members are promoted each year by the KOMCA Board of Directors.

On February 3, 2020, j-hope released his solo track titled βOutro: Egoβ as the last track and second comeback trailer on BTSβ album, βMap of the Soul: 7.β
The video to the song travels through time with lyrics taken from BTSβ debut track βNo More Dreamβ to featuring a backwards sequence of the bandβs music videos.
βOutro: Egoβ went on to rank #1 on iTunes 14 times by July 5, 2020.
βMap of the Soul: 7β was released on February 21, 2020.

On September 23, 2020, j-hope joined BTS at the 75th United Nations General Assembly to share their struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic with youth around the world.

On July 31, 2022, j-hope performed on the last night of Lollapalooza, became the first South Korean artist to headline a main stage at a major U.S. festival. Lollapalooza is a multi-day music festival held annually in Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois.

On September 22, 2022, South Korean singer Crush released his single track titled βRush Hourβ featuring j-hope. The song was introduced as part of Crushβs comeback after serving his mandatory military service.

On October 29, 2022, j-hope and RM made a surprise appearance at the 17th Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign event "Love Your W" hosted by W Korea Magazine held at the Seoul Four Seasons Hotel.
This event has been held since 2006 with the slogan, βLove Your Breastsβ to help spread awareness of breast cancer and the importance of frequent check-ups for females.
On December 31, 2022, j-hope made a solo guest appearance on βDick Clarkβs New Yearβs Rockinβ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2023β where he performed live in New York Cityβs Time Square.

On March 3, 2023, j-hope released his latest song titled βon the streetβ featuring singer/songwriter J. Cole (Jermaine Lamarr Cole).
βon the streetβ is an ode to j-hopeβs artistic roots along with his love for street dancing and hip hop. It debuted at #60 on the Hot 100 to become j-hopeβs first entry on the chart and marked J. Coleβs best showing since 2021.
