-Pre-Debut-
RM became interested in hip-hop music at the age of 11 years old after hearing the song βFlyβ by the South Korean band Epik High. He began using his poetry to create songs after being introduced to rapper Eminemβs music by his school teacher. In 2007, RM began rapping in local amateur hip-hop circles, creating his first self-composed recording with the program Adobe Audition (formerly known as Cool Edit).
RM would join the underground Korean hip-hop scene under the name Runch Randa where he was also part of the hip hop crew Black Pirates along side LUPE (also known as CHANGMO) from 2007 to 2008 and the group DaeNamHyup. He also released music under the names Largo, The Nexist, and Stealo.
In 2010, at the age of 16 years old, RM auditioned for Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk earning a spot at the record label after being scene by Korean rapper Kim Sung-won (also known as Sleepy) who would pass on RMβs contact information to Big Hit. RM would go on to train for the next 3 years as a trainee while also working as a songwriter for the the girl group, Glam, writing their debut single, βParty (XXO)β. He became Big Hitβs first male trainee and first member of BTS.
RM originally went by the stage name, βRap Monsterβ at which he selected for himself when he was an idol trainee. The name derived from the lyrics of a song he wrote that was inspired by South Korean rapper, San Eβs song titled, βRap Geniusβ. The song contains lyrics where San E states that he should be called a βrap monsterβ as he raps non-stop. RM stopped using the name Rap Monster in November 2017 stating that it was no longer representative of who he was or the music he created.
In 2011, Lee Seung Giβs album βTonightβ was released and included the song βThe Song That Will Make You Smileβ featuring RM and j-hope. The song would be remastered and released again in 2020 as part of Lee Seung Giβs compilation album βThe Projectβ.
