  • Aegyo (애교) - A Korean term referring to cute display of affection often expressed through a cute voice, changes to speech, facial expressions, and gestures.

 
  • Agust D - SUGA’s alias adopted in 2016 during the release of his first mixtape. Agust D is backwards for DT SUGA where DT stands for D Town (Daegu Town).

  • All Kill (올킬) - When a song charts number one on all major music charts’ daily and realtime charts simultaneously; this normally happens not too long after its initial release.

  • Apobangpo (아포방포) - Meaning “ARMY Forever, Bangtan Forever”, also abbreviated as AFBF. 아포방포 is the shortened version of “에버, 에버.” It’s a phrase created by Jungkook during one of his fancafe chats with ARMY in 2019.

 
  • A.R.M.Y (ARMY / 아미) - The name of BTS’ official fanclub (also known as the BTS ARMY). A.R.M.Y is an acronym for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth. The official fandom name was established and announced via social media on July 9th, 2013 KST.

  • ARMY BOMB / 아미밤 - The official BTS light stick; typically used to cheer for BTS at concerts or at live events where they are performing. As of April 2020 there are a total of 4 versions.

 
  • “ARMY must be happy no matter what happens, okay?” (아무행알) - A phrase created by Jungkook during one of his fancafe chats with ARMY in 2019. 아무행알 is the shortened version of “미는 슨일이 있어도 복해야해 겠지?” Jungkook used the phrase again after reading a heartfelt letter to ARMYs during BTS’ 2020 Winter Package.

In response, ARMY created 방무행알 which is the shortened version of “탄은 슨일이 있어도 복해야해 겠지?” (Bangtan must be happy no matter what happens, okay?)


B

  • Bak Bak (박박) - Slag for the word ‘Daebak’ (대박) which means great, cool, amazing, awesome. In Episode 150 of BTS’ variety show, ‘Run! BTS,’ the members played a game where they were required to guess slang words commonly used on social media and ‘bak bak’ (박박) was one of them.

 
  • Bangtan Sonyeondan - The full name for BTS. Means ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts.’

 
  • Banana Incident - Around the time of BTS’ debut, Jungkook noticed fruit disappearing rapidly from the fruit basket he received from ARMY. He started arguing that it [fruit basket] was his so j-hope got mad and threw a banana at him while saying, “You eat it all”.

 
  • BANGTAN BOMB (방탄밤) - Short behind the scenes videos of BTS that follows their lives as idols; uploaded onto their youtube channel, BANGTANTV. Check out their very first BANGTAN BOMB here.

 
  • Bangtaned - The act of being 100% obsessed with BTS.

 
  • Bias - Term used to identify ARMY’s favorite BTS member.

 
  • Bon Voyage - A reality show that follows BTS as they travel the world and tackle different situations that travelers might encounter while vacationing.

  • BORAHAE (보라해 ) (I Purple You) - Created by V during BTS’ 3rd Muster on November 12, 2016.

Purple is the last color of the rainbow colors. Purple means I will trust and love you for a long time.” - V

 
  • BT21 (UNIVERSTAR) - BTS collaborated with Line Friends to create 8 unique characters (TATA, KOYA, RJ, SHOOKY, MANG, CHIMMY, COOKY, and VAN) as part of the first project for LINE FRIENDS CREATORS. Visit BT21.COM.

  • BTS FESTA - A special 2 week long celebration that leads up to BTS’ debut anniversary. Right before the celebration begins, Big Hit releases a schedule graphic that lists out the types of content they will be releasing during the countdown. These typically include: family portraits, photo collections, member profiles, special songs produced by BTS, choreography practice videos, and many more!

BTS Festa also ends with a concert for ARMYs where the boys perform songs that are typically not performed at a regular concert/tour, such as special releases (for debut anniversaries) or covers.

  • BTS Gayo - A variety show series that featured BTS as they played games related to K-pop. The show premiered on August 11, 2015 and aired for 2 seasons.

  • BTS Memories - An annual DVD and photobook set released by Big Hit Entertainment that documents BTS’s journey from the indicated year.

 
  • BTS Muster - Official BTS Fan Meetings held annually for official fan club members. Similar to a concert, fan meetings are gathering events where the members would play games with ARMYs and perform a series of songs from their old and more recent releases.

 
  • BTS Photo Studio - A little booth where fans can take pictures with 1 hologram member of BTS. Previously, the event was done by a lottery system and before that, lining up and completing a survey.

  • BTS Universe (BU / Bangtan Universe) - An alternate universe created by Big Hit Entertainment using IP (Intellectual Property) storytelling inspired by BTS.

The very first hint of the BU could be seen in BTS’s concert VCRs for The Red Bullet. However, it didn’t fully flesh out until BTS’s ‘I Need U’ music video released in 2015 and can now be seen across multiple platforms such as: a series of booklets found in BTS’s albums titled 화양연화: The Notes, Line Webtoon (Save Me), as well as a full novel 화양연화: The Notes Book 1 and many more!

  • Chicotle - In a Bangtan Bomb, Jungkook thought Chipotle, a Mexican Grill fast food restaurant, was called "Chicotle". This went viral on Twitter, prompting the official Chipotle Twitter account to change their profile name to Chicotle.

Fun Fact: Inspired by the Bangtan Bomb, US BTS ARMY & Chipotle teamed up to provide ARMY a code to redeem a free bowl on January 25, 2022; it was only available to the first 7000 ARMY who used the code. Read more about it here.

 
  • Chim Chim - The nickname given to Jimin by mentor and rapper, Tony Jones, who formed a close bond with him while working together on BTS’ reality show, ‘American Hustle Life’.

  • Daesang (대상) - The Highest Grand Prize an artist can win at an award show; a Korean award show typically has a few grand prizes given throughout the show, such as: Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and more.

 
  • Daesang Sweep - When all the Grand Prizes have been won by an artist at an award show.

 
  • Daily Music (#데일리뮤직) - A hashtag used by Jungkook for song recommendations on Twitter, inspired by RM's #RMUSIC

  • Dance Line - The dancers of BTS, which consists of J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, and V.

 
  • Dumpling Incident - During one of their practices, Jimin and V argued whether they should eat dumplings during practice or if they should practice first and eat afterwards. According to V, the two didn't talk for two days; this was during the time he was filming for “Hwarang”. Jimin mentioned they made up afterwards at a park. Both have said their friendship became stronger afterwards.

This incident also inspired V to write "4 O'Clock".

  • EatJin - The name Jin gave his mukbang show where he recorded himself eating various foods while chatting with ARMYs. The show originally started off as Jin posting instructions on how to cook certain foods through BTS’ blog.

 
  • Emojis (To represent members) - Often times ARMY translators and sometimes even BigHit staff will use certain emojis to represent a BTS member, see below for reference:

  • Ending Fairy - When a member gets the last close-up before the music show cuts to the next segment/performance. The ending cut member usually does a wink or smile that makes hearts flutter.

 
  • Eye Smile - A distinct facial feature where the eyes form a crescent moon shape from smiling and/or laughing.


F

  • Fancafe - An online fan community on Daum where fans interact with artists and each other as well as receive official announcements regarding the artist. BTS’s official fancafe originally started on Daum in 2013. As of June 30th, 2019, BTS’s official fan community has moved to Weverse, a more global friendly mobile platform. However, official announcements still get posted onto their fancafe.

  • Fanchant - a chant sung/shouted by fans during a song performance. These could be certain parts of the lyrics and/or members’ names in correspondence to the song. Fanchants are created by the artist’s company (and occasionally the artists themselves) for songs that will be promoted during comeback season. Therefore, not all songs have official fanchants.

  • Fansign - A fan event held by the artist and their company to promote a new album or song release. During a fansign fans get the opportunity to talk to the artists, give gifts, and ask questions while their album is getting signed. Often times fansign spots are won through lottery from purchasing albums and have limited spots available.

 
  • First Press - Albums or products issued out in the first batch of the initial release, also known as initial stock. Products that aren’t issued out yet would be a First Press product.

  • Golden Closet Film (GCF) - A series of short films directed, filmed, and edited by Jungkook. Visit our Filmography page for more information and to view video clips.

 
  • Gloss - SUGA’s rapper name used during his underground hip-hop scene days, pre-debut.

  • Golden Maknae (황금막내) - Jungkook’s nickname given by RM during their May 14th, 2013 vlog posted on their YouTube channel, BANGTANTV. “Golden” refers to being well-rounded and extremely talented at everything while “maknae” refers to the youngest member/person.

  • Hwaiting (화이팅) - A Korean phrase derived from the English word for “fighting.” It is used to wish someone good luck or to give them encouragement. It can also be used to say “you can do it,” “let’s go!”, or as a way to cheer someone on.

 
  • Hobi (홉이) - j-hope’s nickname, also a cuter version of his stage name; derived from the “홉” in 제이홉.

  • Hobipalooza (Hobi + Lollapalooza) - A term used by ARMY after j-hope was announced to headline day 4 of Lollapalooza on July 31, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL.

 
  • Hope on the Street - A series of dance videos featuring j-hope and special guests.

 
  • Hwagae Market (화개장터) - The name of SUGA & j-hope’s joint livestream that aired on VLIVE from September 20, 2015 to April 1, 2019.

  • Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa (화양연화) (HYYH) - Korean phrase meaning "The Most Beautiful Moment." It refers to BTS' The Most Beautiful Moment in Life album series, which consists of TMBMIL: Pt. 1, TMBMIL: Pt. 2, and TMBMIL: Young Forever.

 
  • Hyung Line (형라인) - The oldest members of BTS, which consist of Jin, SUGA, J-Hope and RM. “Hyung (형)” means older brother and is only used by males when referring to an older male while “line (라인)”, in this case, refers to a group of 2 or more people that share the same attribute described by the preceding word.

  • I-LOVELIES - A cute nickname given to international ARMYs by K-ARMYs.

  • It’s Definitely You Team (죽어도 너야 팀) - The nickname given to Jin and V by BigHit staff for their song ‘It’s Definitely You’ from the TV series sounds track, ‘Hwarang OST Pt. 2’. The duo performed the song together at the BTS Prom Party in 2018.

At the end of the VLIVE V was added in as well, completing vocal line: JiJinJungTae (지진정태) Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, Taehyung.

 
  • JinGiMin (진기민) - The unit name for Jin, SUGA, and Jimin; created for the VLIVE broadcasted on April 27, 2020. This unit name is comprised of the last syllable of their names: Kim SeokJIN, Min YoonGI, Park JiMIN.

  • Killing Part - A part of choreography, song, music video or performance that is considered the best.

 
  • #KimDaily (#김데일리) - The Twitter hashtag formed by RM around 2015 to showcase his fashion of the day as well as what he was doing. The hashtag began to slow down 2 years later as BTS began to rise in popularity.

 
  • Kim Taehyung’s Music Recommendation (#김태형의음악추천) - A hashtag used by V for song recommendations on Twitter.

  • Love Yourself - This refers to BTS’ album trilogy titled ‘Love Yourself: Her’, ‘Love Yourself: Tear.’ & ‘Love Yourself: Answer’.

  • Maknae Line (막내라인) - The youngest members of BTS, which consists of Jimin, V, and Jungkook. “Maknae (막내)” refers to the youngest member/person while “line (라인)”, in this case, refers to a group of 2 or more people that share the same attribute described by the preceding word.

 
  • Mandakko - The name of Jimin and V’s livestream show that aired from 2015 to 2016. The show featured the duo as they taught ARMYs about their local dialect known as ‘satoori.’

 
  • Manggae Tteok (망개떡) / Mochi - Also known as rice cake; 망개떡/mochi is Jimin’s nickname due to his resemblance to a rice cake and reference to his cute cheeks.

  • Medley - In terms of BTS's concert setlist: a medley is a mashup of songs (typically shortened versions) that BTS performs as a set, back to back without a break. A medley can also mean snippets of each song combined in a video or audio for preview.

 
  • MiniMoni (미니모니) - A nickname used by RM & Jimin known as the MiniMoni pair.

 
  • Min SUGA Genius JJANGJJANGMAN BBOONG BOONG (민슈가천재짱짱맨뿡뿡) - A funny and cute nickname for SUGA that originated from lyrics a fan wrote for one of their “I NEED U, BTS ON AIR” missions for Naver STARCAST.

 
  • My Pretties (이삐들) - A nickname Jimin used for ARMYs in 2015; V has also used this term before.

  • Namjooning - The act of living as Kim Namjoon. This includes taking walks through parks, admiring nature, hanging out with crabs, and having fun with friends.

The term was officially established on August 18, 2019 when an ARMY asked, on Weverse, what BTS were doing during their vacation; RM responded with, “I’m namjooning.”

 
  • Netizen (Internet + Citizen) - A person actively involved in online communities or the internet in general.


O

  • Official Global Fanclub - The official fanclub of BTS run by Big Hit Entertainment.

“Ohmmmmmmyyyyyyyyggghghhhhhhhgggggggggdhdhsjsixudbslsogbdsisgshdbxidjdbdidhdifjfiri” - BTS' reaction when they were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the 63rd GRAMMY Awards on November 24, 2020.

The phrase was also posted on their Twitter account with a video clip of their reaction.

 
 
  • Oppa (오빠) - Meaning older brother, “oppa” is only used by females when referring to or speaking to an older male. However, it is best not to call someone “oppa” if you’ve met them for the first time.

Usually younger fans of an artist will call them “oppa” as a term of endearment.

 
  • OT7 - Meaning “one true seven,” derived from OTP (one true pairing) and is referred to 7 members as a whole.

  • Perfect All Kill (PAK) - When a song charts number one on all major music chart’s categories (daily, realtime, and the Instiz weekly iChart) simultaneously; results are normally revealed at the start of a new week after the song’s initial release.

  • PODO (포도 ) (Pronounced POH-DOH) - Korean word for “grapes,” however, the word was part of SUGA’s rap lyrics in BTS’ song ‘MIC Drop’ as a reference to available seats in a concert seating map.

Normally, when purchasing tickets for a concert, available seats are shown in purple while sold out seats are greyed out. ARMYs will often send each other grape 🍇 images for good luck during ticketing.

  • Rap Line - The rappers of BTS, which consists of RM, SUGA, and J-Hope.

 
  • #RMUSIC - A hashtag used by RM for song recommendations on Twitter.

 
  • Run BTS! - A free BTS variety show provided on the global platform, VLIVE, where the boys take on missions through games and challenges to earn prizes or receive punishments (i.e wearing hanbok to the airport). The first episode aired on August 1, 2015.

  • Suchwita - The name of SUGA’s online variety show that premiered December 5, 2022 on YouTube and Weverse. The name of the show means ‘Time to get drunk with SUGA’ in Korean. As host, SUGA invites guests for an in-depth chat over drinks.

  • Taekook - A nickname for the duo which consists of V & Jungkook; it was one of the comments read by Jungkook during their Parents Day Carnation Making VLIVE.

 
  • Tannies - A nickname used by ARMYs for BTS; derived from the "tan" in 방(Bangtan) and 방소년단(BangTANsonyeondan).

 
  • Third Guy from the Left - This phrase trended number one worldwide after Jin took Twitter by storm (with his amazing looks once again) at the red carpet photo wall during the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. The phrase “third guy from the left” trended number one worldwide.

“Why? Do I look like a Billboard Hot 100 #1 Fan?” (왜요? 제가 빌보드 핫백 1위팬 처럼 생겼나요?) - A phrase used by K-ARMYs in a text photo meme after BTS ranked #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 songs chart for the first time on August 21, 2020 with their hit song ‘Dynamite.’

In response to the meme, the BTS Big Hit Twitter account tweeted the hashtags: #왜요우리가빌보드핫100에서1위한가수처럼보이나요 #맞아요 #1등가수 which translates to “#WhyDoWeLookLikeBillboardHot100No1Singers #ThatsRight #FirstPlaceSingers”
